How I Actually Set Up My Email Automation
Not a generic "best email tools" list - the real trigger, the real platform choice, and the actual sequence running behind the Funding Readiness Checklist.
The real problem this solved
Before this was automated, every new lead who opted in for the Funding Readiness Checklist meant a manual follow-up - checking who signed up, sending the right next email by hand, and hoping nothing fell through the cracks on a busy day. That's fine at five signups a week. It stops being fine the moment the content calendar actually starts working and signups show up faster than one person can answer them one at a time.
Why GetResponse Specifically
I didn't pick GetResponse from a feature comparison spreadsheet. When I first got into online marketing, it was one of the two platforms that kept coming up as the recommended starting point - so I've had history with it since then. My list is still small, and GetResponse's pricing scales with list size, so it's stayed the practical choice economically as much as anything else. For something like the Funding Readiness Checklist funnel - a form, a scored lead magnet, and a multi-step follow-up sequence - that's really all I need, without paying for or learning a heavier platform built for a much bigger team.
The Walkthrough
1. The trigger
Someone fills out the Funding Readiness Checklist form on the site. That form submission is the entry point for everything else - no manual step happens before this.
2. The automation workflow
GetResponse's automation builder watches for that form submission and kicks off a workflow: add the contact to the right list, tag them based on how they answered the checklist, and start the follow-up sequence.
3. The sequence
A five-email automated sequence runs on Day 0, 2, 5, 8, and 12 - each one building on the last, walking the lead from "just downloaded a checklist" toward understanding what their funding readiness actually looks like.
4. The conditional logic
If someone clicks the link to book a Credit Report Analysis mid-sequence, the automation detects that click and stops sending the rest of the generic follow-ups - they move to a different track instead of getting emails that no longer make sense for where they are.
5. Where it stands right now
Still early - the sequence is live and running, but it hasn't had enough real signups yet to show meaningful open or click data. I'd rather say that plainly than make up a result.
The Bug That Will Waste Your Afternoon
In my case, the problem showed up after I pasted hand-coded HTML into GetResponse's editor and then tried to switch out of the HTML editor view - the whole thing hung and wouldn't respond. What finally fixed it was removing every HTML comment from the code and simplifying a few pieces of CSS, including a gradient background and a decorative arrow character in a button. I can't say those exact things will cause the same problem in every account, but if your editor starts hanging after a custom HTML paste, those are the first things I'd test.
Where the Affiliate Link Goes
If you want to try the same setup for your own list, GetResponse has a free trial to start with. The exact automation features available after the trial depend on the plan you choose, so check the current plan limits if you want to duplicate this entire workflow.
Disclosure: This is an affiliate link. If you sign up through it and become a paying customer, I may earn a commission - at no extra cost to you. I only recommend tools I've actually used myself.
Try GetResponse FreeWhere Things Stand Now
Since this went live, I haven't had to manually track a Funding Readiness Checklist signup just to make sure the follow-up gets sent - the sequence runs whether I'm at my desk or not, and every new lead gets the same follow-up on the same schedule instead of whatever I could get to that day. If you're weighing whether to automate your own follow-up, or you've got questions about the setup, drop them in the comments or send me a message.
